Periodically we get inspired to record some of the more memorable days of trips that we have made. They serve to remind us of the things that we have done, the places we have been to and the people we have met and if we do not record them we tend to forget great chunks of the times we have spent away.
For those viewing these diaries we hope you find them interesting but they are more likely to be of interest only to our family and friends.

When we arrived in Aix-en-Provence the owner of the apartment gave us some advice and suggested that we go to Cassis to get out of town. The reason being most things are shut on Sundays (as you may have gathered if you have been following our travels) and that there would be a major triathlon event taking place around the center of Aix. We decided therefore to drive down to the Mediterranean village of Cassis. Unfortunately we were unable to get out of town because everything had been blocked off due to the triathlon! Eventually we got out and started on the journey to Cassis. It was... + details

We left Avignon to head for Aix-en-Provence and on the way visited Gordes, St Rémy de Provence, Les Baux de Provence and Arles. Each one of these villages would warrant more than a day to see everything that they have to offer but we crammed four villages in one day. No wonder we were exhausted when we finally got to Aix-en-Provence. We spent most time in Gordes and Les Baux de Provence. Both of them were exquisite in their different ways. Gordes was a little like Cordes sur Ciel insofar as it was possible to see the village from a distance upon a hill whereas Les Baux de Provence was... + details

We planned a few days in Provence and stopped at the Pont du Gard on our way to Avignon. The bridge was built in the 1st century AD, and is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges and, with the Aqueduct of Segovia, is one of the best preserved. It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985 because of its historical importance. The bridge has three tiers of arches, standing 48.8 m (160 ft) high. The whole aqueduct descends in height by only 17 m (56 ft) over its entire length, while the bridge descends by a mere 2.5 cm (0.98 in) – a gradient of only 1 in 3,000 – which is... + details

The Aussillon market takes places every thursday in the town, rather than the village, of Aussillon. Having spent some time trying to find the market in the village the distinction between the town and the village is well imprinted on our minds. Once we found the market we parked, probably illegally, and started to wander around. There were a lot of stalls selling shoes, clothing, curtains and a whole lot of things that we didn't need but there was also a good undercover food market. There were some wonderful cheeses and we bought some Rochfort. As far as I know it's not possible to... + details
