Sometimes we get inspired to record some of the more memorable days of trips that we have made. They serve to remind us of the things that we have done, the places we have been to and the people we have met and if we do not record them we tend to forget great chunks of the times we have spent away.
For those viewing these diaries we hope you find them interesting but they are more likely to be of interest only to our family and friends.

Bayonne 23 - Castres 13

May 3, 2014

Martin Fuggle

The match between Castres and Aviron Bayonne was important for both teams. For Bayonne they needed to win to avoid relegation and Castres needed to win to maintain 4th spot and maintain their home ground advantage in the finals. We met Jean Jacques and Guy at La Concha restaurant in Anglet for a meal before the match. The restaurant is right at the mouth of the Adour river looking out to the Atlantic and is predominantly a fish restaurant. The wines were excellent and the food was very good. Everyone had grilled sole. I had not had a sole since I left England in 1965 and I remember having... + details

Earthenware from Martres Tolosane

When we returned from Paris we had one day of rest and relaxation before traveling to Biarritz. Apparently it's where the beautiful people go so what on earth were Jenny and I doing there. Well the short answer is we wanted to see Castres play Bayonne in their last match of the season before the finals. More about the match later. The day we drove to Biarritz the weather was the worst we have seen in France. The rain was so heavy that there were times when we could only see a few metres in front of us. We had to stop in Toulouse to pick up the credit card we had left there on our way back... + details

Up the hill to Montmartre

Apr 29, 2014

Martin Fuggle

Montmartre is only worthwhile visiting to see the Basilica of Sacré Coeur and the panoramic views of Paris. Place du Tèrtre with its artists and restaurants is usually so crowded with people that it is difficult to walk around. Nevertheless we took the Métro to Place du Clichy and walked up the hill across the bridge and past the cemetery where Victor Hugo is buried. The destination of most tourists is up the many stairs to the Place du Tertre where we stopped for a short while and had a very expensive coffee before walking on to see the Basilica of the Sacré Coeur and the view of... + details

Galleries Lafayette and Notre Dame

The galleries and part of the dome in Galleries Lafayette

Apr 28, 2014

Martin Fuggle

One might think that Galleries Lafayette is just another Myers or David Jones but the building and in particular the dome make it a most special place. From the ground floor there is a five story high atrium that consists of 'galleries' around the perimeter of the atrium before it turns into the most exquisite dome. Looking up when the sun is shining outside makes it a very special place. The store is full of high value merchandise, and I mean high value. For example de Beers have a section where it's possible to buy beautiful diamond jewellery at exorbitant prices. Silk scarves were... + details
