Northern Territory (June, 2011)

In June, 2011 we set off for a short trip to the Northern Territory with four friends under the guidance of our esteemed tour leader/guide, Geoff Allen.

It’s difficult to remember when we first decided to spend a couple of weeks in the Northern Territory but the fact that we did decide led to one of the best holidays that we have had in Australia. We went with four other friends and one of them knew Alice Springs and Darwin well and acted as our ‘tour guide and mentor’.

It was the first time that Jenny and I had been in the Northern Territory together. I was there in 2000 when I travelled from Melbourne to Darwin via Perth and up the west coast in the final event of the Defence Industry Study Course. We were away for nine days and travelled in a Hercules C130J and went into Kakadu, the Tiwi Islands and flew over Katherine Gorge before flying back to Melbourne. This time we travelled in a little more style and had more time to explore the sights.

Alice Springs

Everyone made their own way to Alice Springs and we met up at the airport, picked up a couple of 4WDs and headed off to the Chifley Alice Resort on the banks of the Todd River. We visited Simpsons Gap, the Desert Park and took a day trip along the Tanami Track to Yuendumu where we all bought some wonderful paintings.

Darwin

Our aim was to get to Darwin but on the way along the Stuart Highway stayed overnight at Tennant Creek and then stopped for lunch at Daly Waters before spending two nights in Katherine and two nights outside of the Litchfield National Park before driving on to Darwin.

Kakadu

After everyone had left Darwin for Melbourne, Jenny and I stayed on and had two days in Kakadu National Park. We stayed overnight in Jabiru at the hotel shaped like a crocodile and went on the Yellow Water and East Aligator River Cruises amongst other things.
